This week Pomewest , peak body organisations and WA growers attended the National Horticulture Growers Consultation session on the Review of the Regional Migration Settings hosted by the Department of Home Affairs.

The federal government continues to review its immigration policy, which could have major ramifications on how the horticulture sector sources labour. The major worry is that the government is considering requiring backpackers to work in regional areas to extend their visas. Discussion and views of horticulture were expressed at the meeting, which supported growers and their industry's labour requirements as well as concerns from an employer’s POV.

This was an opportunity for producers of all Horticultural produce to give feedback about their needs in relation to overseas workers particularly focused on the Working Holiday Makers and the PALM Scheme obligations for employers.
