2024 Nannup South West Food Bowl Agriculture Awareness Days

This was an excellent forum for Pomewest to promote apples and agriculture so that teachers and children can understand where food comes from and the various production systems. We also shared the message that an apple a day keeps the Snackgrets away making sure apples are high on the snackable choice list

Over the last 2 days more than 800 school children aged 10-15 from across the southwest including Dunsborough, Busselton, Manjimup and Nannup have had the opportunity to experience the importance of agriculture.

Pomewest was one of the sponsors for the South West Food Bowl event taking place over 2 days.  Susie and Jen talked about the Mediterranean fruit fly life cycle and when to look out for the larvae and flies in back yard gardens and in the orchard.  They focused on the importance of disposal of infected fruit and vegetables and how to make a homemade trap for adult Med fly.

Apples were supplied to the children attending the day for a No Snackgrets morning tea and with their lunches. Don Hancey, WA Food Ambassador, used apples in a cooking demonstration and had school children assist in preparing an apple-themed hero dish for a five-course dinner on Thursday night.

Thanks to everyone involved. The students were able to visit two of the four working farms: Nannup Fresh Fruit Farm, Cambray Cheese, Dunnet’s Beef, and Out N’ About Eggs. The town-based event included demonstrations from Chestnut Brae and Barrabup Organics, along with interactive hands-on experiences with DPIRD and Blackwood Biosecurity, which informed them about careers in agriculture.
