Irradiation now accepted as an alternative treatment for Codling Moth
This week Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has advised that they will be updating WAIR 061 for Codling Moth (Cydia pomonella).Currently under WAIR061, methyl bromide is the only accepted quarantine treatment for pome fruit. This will soon be changed to include irradiation as an alternative treatment, where certain prerequisites are met.
The updated requirements are below.
Certified as:
Treated with Irradiation at Dmin 400 Gy – Dmax 1000 Gy where permitted for use in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code – Standard 1.5.3.
AND
Accompanied by a declaration stating that the fruit has not been stored under controlled/modified atmosphere conditions at any stage.
