A new online report has been released, showcasing the horticulture sector’s significant role in Western Australia's economy while analysing production trends. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) published the Value of Horticulture Industries in WA 2022-23, building on the inaugural 2020 production data. This report provides valuable insights to support industry, government, and community planning for a stable supply of diverse, affordable, and sustainably grown fresh produce.
“The report also states that apple planting caused a production decline and is expected to recover with new plantings. Eastern states are filling the supply gap and keeping prices stable. WA leads in per capita apple consumption due to quality focus and Bravo® apples’ popularity.
”
In 2022-23, WA’s fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, and amenity horticulture — including turf, nurseries, parks and gardens— reached an estimated wholesale value of $1.75 billion. This marks a 4% increase from 2020 data after adjusting for inflation. Despite general growth, fluctuations were noted, particularly in fruit production due to biennial bearing. Averaging production over two years offers a more accurate picture of total value.
The report highlights trends and values for the top 10 fruit crops, with avocados leading the list, followed by wine grapes, strawberries, apples, table grapes, blueberries, olives, oranges, bananas, and mandarins. On the vegetable front, carrots topped production, followed by cucumbers, fresh ware potatoes, tomatoes, onions, melons, broccoli, lettuce, seed potatoes, and mushrooms.
The report also highlights the challenges posed by difficult global operating conditions and seasonal impacts. Rising input costs, including labour expenses, and high interest rates are putting pressure on business cash reserves, potentially limiting reinvestment for productivity gains.
This comprehensive resource will assist industry stakeholders in identifying opportunities, addressing challenges, and adapting operations to build strong, resilient, and sustainable businesses.
