Domestic Import Note – Fruit and fruiting vegetable carriers of fruit fly
Update to the requirements for the import of fruit and fruiting vegetables that are potential carriers of various fruit fly species.
Who do these changes effect?
Domestic businesses that:
· import fruit and fruiting vegetables into Western Australia (WA)
· export fruit and fruiting vegetables from other states and territories to WA.
What are the changes?
Western Australian Import Requirements (WAIR) for the import of fruit and fruiting vegetables into WA to mitigate the risk of introducing various fruit fly species were updated on 10 November 2023.
The updated WAIR can be found at
· WAIR 00A – all fruit
· WAIR 04 – all fruit
· WAIR 04B – avocado
· WAIR 04C – pawpaw/papaya
· WAIR 04D – citrus (citron, finger lime, grapefruit, lemon, lime, Tahiti lime, mandarin, orange, pummelo, tangelo
· WAIR 04E – babaco, black sapote, mangosteen, pawpaw, Tahiti lime
· WAIR 04F – durian, jaboticaba, jackfruit, longan, lychee, pomegranate and rambutan
· WAIR 04G – mango
· WAIR 04H – banana
· WAIR 08A – strawberry fruit
· WAIR C80a, WAIR C80b – Stonefruit
Updates include:
Additional treatment options
· Addition of the option for post-harvest cold treatment for cherry, plum, peaches and nectarines
· Addition of the option for post-harvest dip or flood spray using dimethoate for citron, finger lime, grapefruit, lemon, lime, Tahiti lime, mandarin, orange, pummelo and tangelo.
Secure conditions
· Clarification of the need for secure storage and transport following treatment to prevent the potential infestation of produce by fruit fly.
Other amendments
· Clarification of the host list of species and states and territories where the species are present
· Removal of the option for post-harvest treatment using dimethoate for tropical and subtropical fruit with inedible skin as dimethoate is no longer registered for this use
· Update to the vapour heat treatment schedule for mango
· Addition of an option to recognise pest free areas, pest free place of production and pest free production sites where the procedure is approved by the Chief Plant Biosecurity Officer WA.
Reason for the change
Following notification of the proposed suspension of dimethoate, a review of import conditions was initiated. The review identified the need to consolidate, clarify and update requirements to support trade while reducing the risk of bringing in fruit fly species not established in WA.
